Map of the World, c1701. Nautical table showing magnetic variations. The phenomenon of magnetic variations was noticed during the first ocean voyages in the 1490s, but it was not understood. It was Edmond Halley who from 1698-1700 undertook an Atlantic voyage to measure the variations and plot them systematically. After 1700, a version of this chart was part of the navigator's essential equipment.
