Diet of Worms. Assembly of the princes of the Holy Roman Empire held in Worms (Germany) from 28 January to 25 May 1521. It was presided over by Emperor Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire. Its purpose was to address the works of the reformer Martin Luther (1483-1546) for his criticism of the Church. Luther was summoned to recant his theses. Between 16 and 18 April, Luther spoke before the Diet, without renouncing his beliefs and vigorously defending his Protestant stance.
