Berlin, Germany. St. Nicholas Church (Nikolaikirche). Built around 1230, it is the oldest church in the city. Originally a Roman Catholic church, it became Lutheran after the Protestant Reformation in the Electorate of Brandenburg in 1539. On Reformation Day in 1938 (31 October), the church served its congregation for the last time. The temple was given up to the government to be used as a concert hall and ecclesiastical museum. During World War II, its roof and the tops of its towers were destroyed as a result of Allied bombing in 1945. In 1949, all the vaults and the northern pillars collapsed. The ruins were located in East Berlin, and the authorities of the German Democratic Republic did not allow their reconstruction until 1981. It was finally rebuilt in 1987 according to the original designs and plans.
