Heinrich Barth (Johann Heinrich Barth) (1821-1865). German explorer. Between 1850 and 1855, he took part in a British expedition led by James Richardson, travelling across the Sahara from Tripoli to Chad. He crossed the entire central region of Sudan, from Lake Chad to Timbuktu. Near Timbuktu, he was greeted by a crowd of people who welcomed him. Barth, under the name Abd al-Karim, the Syrian pilgrim.
