Hugh Clapperton (Bain Hugh Clapperton) (1788-1827). British naval officer and explorer of West and Central Africa. Walter Oudney (1790-1824) was appointed by Lord Bathurst, then Colonial Secretary, to go to Bornu as consul, accompanied by Hugh Clapperton. From Tripoli, in early 1822, they set off southwards for Murzuk, where they were later joined by Major Dixon Denham, who found them in a sorry state.
