Hatuey (c. 1478-1512). Taino chieftain, native of the island of Hispaniola (now Haiti and the Dominican Republic). He fought against the Spanish conquistadors on his native island and in Cuba. After being captured by the Spaniards of Governor Diego Velazquez de Cuellar (1465-1524), he was burned alive on February 2, 1512, at Yara (Cuba). Martyrdom and death of chieftain Hatuey.
