It confronted the French troops under the command of General Suchet against the Spanish troops led by Juan Senen de Contreras, military governor of the city. The fighting took place between 5 May and 29 June 1811, ending with the French occupation of the city. Tarragona remained under French control until Suchet's retreating on 13 August 1813.
