Guido Reni (1575-1642). Joseph and Potiphar's wife. 1625. Oil on canvas. Painting was in collection of the Vorontsov-Dashkovs in St. Petersburg. The painting depicts an episode of the Old Testament legend about Joseph the Beautiful, who fell into slavery to the courtier of the Egyptian pharaoh Pentefrey. Pentefry's wife, inflamed with passion for young Joseph, was rejected by him, and out of resentment accused him of an attempt on her honor. Joseph was thrown into prison after she presented his cloak, which remained in her hands, as proof of her words.
