On 12 July 1594, a trial began before the Parlement of Paris. It pitted the University of Paris, together with the city's parish priests, against the Society of Jesus. Antoine Arnauld acted as the University's lawyer, charging the Jesuits of having provoked the French Wars of Religion in order to favour Spain.
