Jacques-Benigne Bossuet (1627-1704). French clergyman, bishop, preacher and writer. He defended political absolutism and the divine right of kings. Bossuet preached regularly before the court of King Louis XIV at Versailles. He was appointed tutor to the Dauphin, Louis (1661-1711), in 1670 and elected a member of the Academie Francaise in 1671. In 1681, he was appointed bishop of Meaux, a position he held until his death. Portrait of Jacques-Benigne Bossuet, Bishop of Meaux, 1723.
