French Revolution. Flight to Varennes (20-21 June 1791). Arrest of King Louis XVI (1754-1793) and his family at Varennes on 21 June 1791, as he tried to reach the Royalist stronghold of Montmedy. He returned under custody to Paris, swearing allegiance to the constitution, which recognised him as a monarch with limited powers. Chromolithography by Vicente Gine.
