French Revolution. Chouannerie. Battle of Quiberon (23 June to 21 July 1795). Troops of the First French Republic faced a counter-revolutionary army (Armee des emigres), composed of noble refugees after the Revolution and former soldiers of the army of King Louis XVI, who were transported on British ships in support of the revolt of the Chouannerie and the Vendee. On 17 July, on the eastern shore of the Quiberon peninsula, forces of the Republican General Lazare Hoche (1768-1797), after taking the fort of Penthievre, repelled the Royalists who were forced to flee by sea or surrender. Disembark and defeat of the Royalists at Quiberon. Drawing by H. Rousseau after Raffet. Engraving. ""History of the French Revolution"". Volume I, part 2, 1879.
