French Revolution. Revolt of 1 Prairial Year III. Popular revolt in Paris on 20 May 1795 against the policies of the Thermidorian Convention. A mob stormed the Convention demanding bread. The deputy Jean-Bertrand Feraud (1759-1795), in charge of supplies in Paris, tried to hold back the crowd while waiting for the National Guard to arrive, but a woman shot him, killing him on the spot. The enraged crowd cut off Feraud's head, nailing it to a pike and carrying it to the Convention chamber. A man in his fifties named Jean Tinelle raised it in front of the President, Theodore Vernier. Assassination of Deputy Feraud in the Convention. Engraving by Jonnard. ""History of the French Revolution"". Volume I, part 2, 1879.
