French Revolution. Festival of the Supreme Being on the Champ de Mars in Paris, on 20 of Prairial Year II (8 June 1794). Civic feast celebrated during the Reign of Terror. The National Convention established the cult of the Supreme Being, fixing a day for its first celebration, the 20 Prairial, to be celebrated every ten days. Robespierre presiding over the first celebration, coinciding with his presidency of the Convention. The stage design was by Jacques-Louis David. Engraving by Jonnard.
