Charles Maurice de Talleyrand (Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Perigord) (1754-1838), Prince of Talleyrand. French secularized clergyman, statesman, and diplomat. Ordained a priest in 1779, he was appointed Bishop of Autun in 1788. During the French Revolution he adhered to the Civil Constitution of the Clergy (1790), renouncing the priesthood later to lead a secular life. Elected deputy for the clergy to the Estates General in 1789. President of the National Constituent Assembly (16-27 February 1790). French Ambassador to the United Kingdom (1792-1793). Portrait.
