The King visited Paris on that date and was welcomed at the Hotel de Ville by Lafayette and Jean Sylvain Bailly (1736-1793), who had been appointed Mayor of Paris on 15 July. Sensing the events that were about to unfold, several prominent members of the nobility, including the Count of Artois, the Prince of Conde, the Baron de Breteuil, the Duke of Enghien, the Duke of Broglie, the Duke of Polignac and his wife, were the first to leave France.
