Jean Sylvain Bailly (1736-1793). French politician, scientist and academic. Mayor of Paris (1789-1791). Elected on 12 May 1789, first deputy of the Third Estate of Paris to the Estates General. President of the National Assembly (17 June to 3 July 1798). Called to testify during the trial of Marie-Antoinette, he refused to testify against her and deposed in her favour, which led to his trial on 11 November 1793, sentenced to the guillotine and executed the following day.
