After the fall of the Bastille in 1789. Foulon de Doue. Comptroller General of Finance under Louis XV. fled to Viry-Châtillon. a few miles south of the capital. Soon after. he was captured by peasants and forced to walk barefoot with a bundle of hay on his back. The sweat from his face was wiped with nettles. Digital reproduction of a historical original.
