John Porteous. Captain of the Edinburgh City Watch. overreacted to riots that left six people dead. He was arrested and convicted of murder. He was eventually dragged from his cell and lynched by a mob. He died shortly before midnight on September 7. 1736. England. Digital reproduction of a historical original.
