Pius IX (born May 13, 1792 - February 7, 1878) was the 255th Pope from 1846 to 1878. His pontificate, the longest on record at 31 years and 8 months, included the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, the First Vatican Council with its propagation of papal primacy of jurisdiction and papal infallibility, and the loss of the Papal States to the Kingdom of Italy.
