Jean de Bethencourt (ca. 1362-1425). Norman explorer who led an expedition to the Canary Islands in 1402, landing first on the north coast of Lanzarote. From there he conquered the islands of Fuerteventura (1405) and El Hierro for Castile, defeating their local chieftains. Bethencourt became Lord of the Canary Islands (1404-1425). Portrait.
