It faced the followers of Sudanese religious leader Muhammad Ahmad bin Abdullah bin Fahal, the self-proclaimed Mahdi, against Egyptian Khedivate troops, who were later joined by British forces. The Mudir of Dongola attending a review of the British troops, commanded by Herbert Stewart (1843-1885), after arriving from Wadi Halfa at the Mudir's court in August 1884. Stewart held the rank of brigadier-general, commanding a cavalry brigade that had been ordered to Khartoum to relief Major-General Charles George Gordon. Engraving by Vela.
