The Irun Customs Office was created in 1841 by order of General Espartero, the Spanish regent, for the decision to move inland customs to the coast and the border. The new customs building was constructed in 1882, next to the railway station. In 1884 it was used as a lazaretto during the cholera-morbo epidemic of Asian origin.
