Gravina (1882). Iron-hulled, unarmoured cruiser. Shipwreck of the Spanish cruiser ‘Gravina’ during its route from Manila to Shanghai on 10 July 1884 due to a typhoon on Fuga Island, in the Babuyan archipelago, when it was heading for the Strait of Formosa in Musa Bay, north of Luzon (Philippines). A large part of the crew was saved thanks to the heroic action of the navy doctor Eugenio Fernandez Valdes, who managed to get a cable until the island and secure it, after several officers had failed and died in the attempt. The ship was commanded by frigate captain Jose Garcia de Quesada. Rescue of the crew by means of the cable brought ashore. Drawing by Rafael Monleon. Engraving by Tomas Carlos Capuz (1834-1899). The Spanish and American Illustration (La Ilustracion Espanola y Americana). September 22, 1884.
