Port of Mahon (Port of Mao), Menorca, Balearic Islands, Spain. Lazaretto quarantine island (Illa del Llatzaret) and ruins of the Castle of San Felipe. The lazaretto was built in 1793 by the Count of Floridablanca, by order of King Carlos III. Due to the arrival of the bubonic plague to the coasts of Menorca by means of ships from northern Africa and the East, the king decided to provide a place to quarantine and observe ships coming from other countries suspected of contagion.
