United States. State of Pennsylvania. Floods in Pennsylvania, February 2 and 3, 1883. A violent snowstorm developed into torrential rains, causing the ice mountains flanking the banks of the Alleghany River, extending eight miles to Pittsburgh, to break up. Ice floes, large in size, were swept down the river. Invasion of Herr's Island (Pitssburgh) by water and ice floes from the Alleghany River. Engraving by Bernardo Rico (1825-1894).
