The caption on this 1903 image reads: “Dahabieh descending the Nile.” It appeared in the book History of Egypt by French Egyptologist Gaston Maspero. A dahabieh is a long light-draft houseboat used on the Nile that is lateen-rigged and is often propelled wholly or partly by engines.
