On July 3, 1898, the United States navy won the battle at Santiago in Cuba. It was one of the key battles in the Spanish-American War of 1898, and the Spanish fleet was completely destroyed. Here, a Spanish ship (its country flag flying atop its mast) lists after being struck by a US navy ship.
