In 1765, the English Parliament passed a revenue law called the Stamp Act that required publications and legal documents in the American colonies to bear a stamp.The act was strongly opposed in the colonies, and many Stamp Act officials were beaten by colonists, as depicted here in this late 1800s engraving.
