The figure represented here is the Emperor Justinian II in A.D. 711. Justinian II (669-711) was the last reigning Byzantine emperor. He abolished the office of consul. The Byzantine Empire was based in Constantinople (present-day Istanbul in Turkey). The illustration dates to 1882.
