John and Alexander Ruthven, attempting to kidnap or kill James VI of Scotland, are seen here fighting for their lives against the King's attendants after being caught in the act. They were killed. The incident, which happened in August 1600 at Gowrie House, Perth, Scotland, became known as the Gowrie Conspiracy. After an engraving by Jan Luyken.
