Propaganda picture depicting brutality of the Spanish army in 1573 after the surrender of Haarlem, Netherlands, during the Eighty Years War. The picture shows Spanish commander Fadrique Alvarez de Toledo clubbing a woman and her child to death. In truth Haarlem's civilians were spared, having agreed to pay the Spaniards for their lives, but most of the defending military garrison were executed. After an 18th century engraving.
