The Illustrated London News Etching From 1854. The Wreck Of The Troop Ship Charlotte. The British Ship Charlotte, Built In 1844 At Liverpool, Departed Cork For Calcutta With 168 Officers And Soldiers (Detachments Of The 27th Regiment), 14 Women And 27 Children, 100 Tons Of Iron, 70 Tons Of Steel, 100 Bales Of Cotton Mule Twist, And About 100 Cases Of Goods. on September 20th, 1854, While Anchored In Algoa Bay For Fresh Supplies, Charlotte Lost Her Anchor And Was Wrecked On The Rocks Exactly Opposite The Flagstaff At The End Of The Jetty-Street, Algoa Bay. 62 Soldiers, 18 Crew, 11 Women And 26 Children Drowned.
