Légende

Agustina Zaragoza Domenech (1786-1857). Heroine of the Peninsular War (1808-1814), during the first siege of Saragossa. Known as Agustina of Aragon. She fought against the French troops in the defence of the bastion of Portillo, in Saragossa. Agustina de Aragon contributed to the defence by encouraging the artillerymen and bringing them ammunition and food. The corporal in command of the Portillo artillery battery was wounded, as were the rest of the soldiers at the position. As the battery was exposed to be captured by the French, Agustina fired using one of the cannons. Some wounded artillerymen were able to help her while reinforcements arrived, keeping the position and forcing the enemy to retreat. 2 July 1808. Chromolithography, detail. "Historia General de Espana" (General History of Spain), by Miguel Morayta. Volume IV. Madrid, 1892.
