Vishnu Gajendramoksha

Légende

Vishnu Gajendramoksha. At the right Vishnu blesses the king of the elephants, Gajendra, who is kneeling before him. The god, shown here as fair complexioned, carries in his upper right hand the chakra (discus) and in his upper left hand the shankha (conch); his lower right hand rests on the back of the kneeling elephant and his lower left hand is in varada mudra. A diminutive Sri Devi stands to the left of her consort, looking up to him with her hands respectfully folded in anjali mudra. On the left is a circular expanse of water in which the emaciated elephant is on the verge of being drowned by the crocodile that has caught hold of its leg. Vishnu’s chakra, shown here flying over the water, decapitates the crocodile, and its severed head lies on the shore of the lake.
