Joe the Genie of Steel (1950) is a promotional comic book distributed by the U.S. Steel Corp. "Born many years ago inside a mountain of iron ore, Joe Magarac was the biggest, strongest, and best steelworker that ever passed throuh the gates of a steel plant." In this promotional comic, Joe Magarac, the magic spirit of the steel industry, teaches young Johnny the history of steel. Joe Magarac is a pseudo-legendary American folk hero. He is presented to readers as having been the protagonist of tales of oral folklore told by steelworkers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which later spread throughout the industrial areas of the Midwestern United States. Magarac first appeared in print in a 1931 Scribner's Magazine article by Owen Francis, who said he heard the story from Croatian immigrant steelworkers in Pittsburgh area steel mills.
