The name derives from pot ash, which refers to plant ashes soaked in water in a pot, the primary means of manufacturing the product before the industrial era. "One package will make nearly a barrel of beautiful white soft soap at a cost of 25 cts ; One package will make ten to twenty pounds best hard soap from waste grease and cost about 2 cts per pound ; Extra concentrated strenght; Geo. F. Gantz & Co. 62 Pine St. N.Y.".
