(15-24 May 1997) --- The Volga River enters the Caspian, the world's largest inland sea, from the north in this high oblique view. The Volga, the principle waterway of western Russian, is considered the historic cradle of Russia. The Ural River, east of the Volga, also enters the northern part of the Caspian. The dimensions of the Caspian are 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) from north to south, but averages 320 kilometers (200 miles) in width. Oil and natural gas are this regions most important resources.
