Berlin Wall Photo - 1961 - Photographic Warfare - The Newest "Weapon" of the Communist Regime In East Berlin is the Camera
Photographic Warfare - The newest "weapon" of the Communist Regime in East Berlin is the camera. After weeks of ducking photographs taken from the Western Sector, the Communists early in October began shooting pictures themselves across the line. Always in plain view, the photographers seen to be trying to intimidate West Berliners by suggesting that the pictures will be put on file to be used for later identification.

The ominous photographing has had no apparent affect on West Berliners, however, who continue to gather by the fence to wave to friends or to jeer the "people's police" guards on the other side. Most of the guards, meanwhile, still seem camera-shy, trying to hide their faces whenever they see a West Berlin photographer approach.

Here, an East Berlin photographer, in civilian clothes, aims his camera at West Berliners. He stands in plain view in the "death strip" at Berlin-Rudow. The 100 meter wide strip gives Communist guards a clear field of fire against East Berliners trying to escape to freedom in the West.
