The surrender of the Dachau concentration camp to American forces of the Army’s 42nd Infantry Division, April 29, 1945 in Dachau, Germany. The German officer serving as commander of the camp, second from right, SS Lt. Heinrich Wickert (Wicker), is joined on his right by Swiss representative of the International Red Cross, Dr. Victor Maurer. The group was photographed alongside the “death train” of railcars holding the dead of those transferred to Dachau prior to the camp surrender. American Soldiers of the U.S. 7th Army, including the 42nd Infantry and 45th Infantry and 20th Armored Divisions participated in the camp’s liberation
