Magic lantern slide circa 1900.Victorian/Edwardian.Social History.No. 9.—Museum, Ground Floor. Here we get a far better general idea of the interior court of a Moorish * palace than in our last. In the centre Ave notice a fountain of crystal water playing; around it a rich profusion of ferns, palms, bananas, and other semi-tropical vegetation renders the picture a specimen which the inner courtyard of a Moorish mansion, always open to the sky, usually presents, and which seems so necessary a luxury in such a hot climate. Here the coolness so necessary in a tropical clime is alone to bo found; it is here that the master of the Moorish house spends most of his time. Here he invariably receives bis guests, especially if they be strangers, as such visitors are not generally allowed to enter the more private apartments. Around the side of the court are many fragments more or less entire of ancient statuary, chiefly Roman, found in various parts of the province [B]. Ascending the step, we reach the first floor.
