Magic lantern slide circa 1900.Victorian/Edwardian.Social History.No. 17.—La Femme Sauvage, Algiers.—About three or four miles from the Place du Governement, along the main road in the direction of Ilusscin Doy, we come to what is called “ La Femme Sauvage.” This is really an Arab roadside inn, a temporary halting-place for those Arabs whose occupation it is to bring supplies of various kinds to Algiers. The inn is beautifully sheltered from the glare of a semi-tropical sun, at the back, by a rapidly-rising hillside, and at the sides by a profu¬sion of the fresh green of the banana trees. At this inn often during the daytime groups of Arabs may be seen sipping cool drinks, playing at cards [B], or lying quietly asleep beneath the grateful shade of the surrounding trees.
