Magic Lantern slide circa 1900 hand coloured. Titled Cities and places of interest in the Mediterranean. 5—THE CHURCH OF NOTRE DAME DE LA GARDE. It is not only the beauty of this church, but its pathetic associations also that appeal to the minds of those visiting it. Here it is the custom of all those who have been rescued from any dangers at sea, or of those who, following the calling of seamen, feel grateful to the providence that protects them, to bring decorations and gifts as an offering to Her who watches over them; and consequently the interior of the church is beautifully ornamented. The tower which, as the accompanying view shows, contains on its summit a statue of the Virgin and Child, is very high, and from it a very fine view' is obtainable, amongst other objects visible being the Chateau D'lf, where Dumas' hero of fiction, Monte Christo, was supposed to be , and where Mirabeau actually was incarcerated.
