This view of a portion of the island is close by the spot where the jaded and enervated tyrant Tiberius constructed the baths in which he sought to restore his broken-down frame. Close at band is also the rock from which he and his still more brutal myrmidon, Sejanus, were in the habit of having slaves flung into the sea for their amusement. The portion of the Bay, of which we here get a view, covers a large quantity of coral-beds, the obtaining of which fnrnish.es [B] the natives with their principal means of existence.
