It is unnecessary to state that this prince of navigators was born, not at Genoa, but at a village close at hand named Cogoleto, and here is a poor and squalid inn, bearing on its walls an inscription in Latin to the effect that “ here Columbus first saw the fight.” The Genoese of latter days have spared no pains to glorify the memory of their greatest man, and the statue they have raised to him is worthy of his fame.
