Shining out from the appalling welter of loathsome German brutality is this one instance of chivarly, which Sir John French reported in his despatch of September 11th. On the previous day a small party of French, under a non-commissioned officer, was cut off and surrounded: After a desperate resistance it was decided to go on fighting to the end.
