Nicolas de Fer was the youngest son of the Parisian printer and publisher card Antoine de Fer . At the age of twelve he began his apprenticeship as an engraver . After the death of his father in 1673 he took over the publishing house that was under his leadership a few years booming. De Fer created numerous atlases , specializing in the publication of prints of current events: Maps of borders or newly conquered territories and maps of cities, by the French military architect Vauban were expanded. It Fer benefited de of his good relationship with the French Court and in 1691 an official geographer of the French Dauphin , in 1702 the Duke of Anjou - the later King of Spain - and last of the French king himself The logo de Fer was royal "the" so-called Sphere, an armillary sphere , which has many of its publications printed on. His major work, the Atlas Curieux was first published in 1700 in Paris until 1717 and saw many editions. At his death in 1720 he left three married daughters. His sons, the paper merchant Guillaume Danet and engraver Jacques-François Besnard (aka "Bénard") conducted - each in its own account - the business further de Fer.
