Fresco from the Villa of the Mysteries, Based on similar paintings which decorated the temple of Dionysus at Pergamum, Asia Minor, the frescoes re enact the sacred marriage of the god to the mortal Ariadne. Young satyr plays the pipes while his companion suckles a goat. The scene has been interpreted as the goddess Fenta Fauna suckling the goat. Italy. Roman. Second half of 1st C BC. Pompeii.
