Part of a copper, In the late 19thC population decrease and increased wealth caused greater Kwakiutl rivalry for status positions. Possession of copper no longer guaranteed prestige consequently some coppers were cut into sections and scornfully handed to rivals who had to accept them and the implied humilitation.
