The legendary hero Tsoede is reputed to have brought this sculpture backto Nupe on his escape from Idah, the Igala capital, in the C16th, The dynasty of kings which he founded ruled until the Fulani jihads of the C19th. More recently the sculpture was washed in the Niger each Friday to promote fertility. Nigeria. Ife. c late 13 / 14th Century. Tada, Central Nigeria.
